This approach demands a clean pipeline and discipline across the board. Etsy invested in automated testing systems that ensured the main branch remained stable at all times. They didn’t rely on careful coordination between teams. Instead, they demanded that code be capable of standing on its own. That pressure built engineering maturity.

There’s also a systems cost C-suite leaders should be aware of. Trunk-based development reduces the overhead of managing parallel branches, QA delays, and late-stage bugs. It drives developer accountability and creates a stronger shared ownership of the product. Everyone works on the real system—not a local version that may or may not reflect reality.

Start small, open a useful internal library, build proper documentation, and make contribution easy. What you release to the world can often return in far more valuable ways than keeping it locked behind permissions and process.
